New Hotspot For Art Galleries
Cheongdam-dong, often considered the Beverly Hills of Seoul, may just be the next hotspot for this city's art aficionados. "Cheongdam-dong is experiencing a gallery boom," said Josephin Suh, account manager for Communique, and currently in charge of art exhibitions at Maison Hermes. With its abundance of designer shops, upscale cafes and restaurants, and a new set of posh clubs, it should come as no surprise that snazzy galleries are also popping up in this ritzy neighbourhood. But what does come as a surprise, is that these are not just low-brow exhibits for the light-hearted visitor; these galleries are serious about art. "Insa-dong is no longer much of a place for art. It is more of a tourist hotspot," said Yoo Art Space curator Shin Kyung-ah.
Subdivision owners had enough of damage created by rain
After three years of complaining about runoff from a developing subdivision onto his property -- with little result -- Geoff Blanco has had enough. "Every time it rains, whether it's 8 or 2 in the morning, I have to consider whether I need to go work on the creek dams so that water doesn't enter my pond and property to wash over everything to create a brown mess," Blanco said. The developers, he says, are allowing ongoing degradation of adjacent properties and polluting a sensitive creek nearby with mud because they fail to maintain silt fences and other erosion control measures at the site. One of the developers is state Sen. Karen Tallian, D-Ogden Dunes, an attorney who's profiled herself as environmentally friendly. Tallian also acts as the attorney for the developers, Duneland Development Group.
